| Customer Reviews: a surprisingly versatile instrument April 21, 2009 Peter B. Hales (Chicago, IL USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I first purchased the Baby Taylor more than a decade ago, shortly after it first came out. Mine actually came with a hardshell case, which has served it well. It is a travel guitar, which means it fits easily into overhead compartments of aircraft and can be tossed around without too much regard for damage. With a satin finish that won't cause you to grieve when it gets nicked or scratched, it's a fine travel instrument, far better to my ears than the other premium travel guitars that have followed.
I have used this guitar in performance considerably, tuned to a personal favorite, EBEBEF, and also recorded with it in a wide variety of tunings, including special-stringed "Nashville" tuning, in which the bottom three strings (bass) are replaced with the same GBE strings as the treble triad.
Playing it, even out of the box, the Baby Taylor has a characteristically percussive sound, loud but without a great deal of sustain, and with a very pleasant treble sweetness with a bit of bite. String balance is excellent. Sonically, the instrument is well-balanced, and an excellent instrument for finger-style blues and ragtime. With its shortened scale it is more difficult to get into perfectly intonated tuning than a full-size guitar but the intonation is excellent overall. It is very ease to tweak the neck angle using the neck adjustment (a no-no that I vote yes-yes to with all my instruments!), and it can be set to a very low action without significant buzzing. Over time, the instrument has mellowed and opened up, and the top has aged gracefully. This is my top recommendation particularly for young players starting out-- it's loud enough for group class lessons, it holds its own in jam sessions, and the fingerboard is flat and easy to maneuver for small or larger hands alike. Played professionally, it is a remarkably valuable addition to a band, as it provides a significant shift in tone that's useful to add variety to performances. It can easily be fitted with a Fishman undersaddle passive pickup, and then run into a Fishman Aura system, which has a setting for the Baby Taylor, so that the pickup-produced, amplified sound is spot-on replica of the same guitar played in the studio into a big-diaphragm recording mike. And on the road? Unbeatable!
Great Beginners guitar September 7, 2007 Robert A. Wachtel (Ponca City, OK United States) 7 out of 10 found this review helpful
I purchased my Baby Taylor about 4 years ago, it was a great guitar for one of my kids to learn on. Good sound projection, stayed in tune. She outgrew the size of the guitar, so we sold it earlier this year. It is well worth the investment over your standard beginner guitar.
